Something I don't know is who the buyer(s) for Model 17 were. The
documentation I have came from the F.C.C. and suggests that they were
interested in monitoring German Hellschreiber traffic during WW-II.
Seems likely that secret agencies in the U.S. and England would also
have wanted some of those machines. I guess if they were being used
in England they would have to be modified for 50 Hz motors.
There are more books about the "Y" services than I will ever be able to
read - maybe someone knows something about whether Hellschreiber was
actively pursued in WW-II. It would seem to have limited usefulness
to military forces since the transmitter is so cumbersome, though the
receiver is simple. Hence as a system it seems more useful for a
broadcast type operation than for one where all stations exchange traffic.
