I think the Hell Feldfernschreiber teleprinter  (
https://www.nonstopsystems.com/radio/hellschreiber.htm ) is fascinating! I
recently ran across "tape facsimilie," which uses the same receive system,
but the transmit side uses an optical scanner to read hand written (or
maybe even typed) tape instead of encoding the pixel pattern with a
keyboard. More info at
