In the early years CQ was an important source of information about RTTY.
In fact I learned of the existence of RTTY through reading a CQ column
back about 1954. That put me in touch with Merrill Swan W6AEE who
published the RTTY magazine in Southern California. Wayne Green W2NSD
was the original RTTY columnist in CQ before he became editor of the
magazine.

QST in those days rarely published anything about RTTY. I think for one
thing the old guard were annoyed that early RTTY took up about a KHz of
bandwidth to transmit at 60 wpm and CW could transmit almost as fast with
a lot less bandwidth. Probably too QST was biased in favor of things
you could build yourself or buy new - they didn't take surplus ads. And
RTTY required that you find a used TTY machine which was hence surplus.
