I made a push to finish cleaning the keyboard on the 28ASR I recently
acquired so it would not drag into next week. I managed to get it all
back together which surprised me a little bit. One thing I would like
to ask is was/is there some "secret" to getting the keyboard cover back
on over the keys? What I ended up doing was slipping it over the red
keys first. Then I found a small brass rod which was long enough to go
across the keyboard. I used that to keep the QWERTY key row lined up
until I could get them slipped into the cover. Then I used needle nose
pliers to guide each key of the lower rows into place using the key stem.
The keys cleaned up well. I stumbled upon another unorthodox solution.
I mentioned that I had used the Fast Wax product to soak the keys to
remove the accumulated grime. Some keys still had very slight hints of
the brown stuff on them. I tried another automotive product called
Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish to see if it would remove the last
vestiges of the brown stuff. It worked so well that I went back to each
key, removed it, then polished with Mothers. I would use one cloth to
apply the cream, then rub it, then used a clean cloth to buff it. I
would go until the key felt very smooth with the clean cloth. I will
let you judge the results for yourself. It really made the colors of
the red keys pop out, I though.
Perhaps the best news for me is that this low-level cleaning seems to
have solved the problem I was having with random LF's being punched on
the tape. I don't know if the keyboard cleaning did this or the extra
oiling I tried to give the punch while I had the typing unit out. I am
attaching a photo of the keyboard as it was when I got the machine for
comparison.
Another question I have is that on the "J" key there is an inverted
triangle symbol. The printer does print something there but it is hard
to distinguish. Was that symbol for anything in particular?
