With an almost 12 kV differential, it must be fun to reach in there to
clear paper jams.
Truly amazing technology. I'm still impressed with the heater boiling ink
inkjet. It's amazing to me that it goes as fast as it does. Really clever
design with very few moving parts. Probably the most complicated part is
the paper feed. As I mentioned previously, I used to have a Multilith
model 80 and a 1250 offset press. The 80 used a rubber roller to TRY to
feed one sheet of paper into the press at a time. It often fed several.
Most of the time, I ended up feeding it by hand. The 1250 had a vacuum
pickup that would very nicely pick up one sheet of paper and feed it into
the press. My HP inkjet does a nice job of feeding just one piece of paper
through at a time. And, it can even flip the paper around to print on the
other side. Of course, a tractor feed inkjet would be even simpler.
Anyway, I think that's the most complicated part of the printer, though
I'm sure the details of the print head are amazingly complex and cost a
lot to develop.
