[GreenKeys] ASR33 Typing by itself at powerup

I found that the keyboard spring, which I had taken out earlier, was not aligned well on at least one key.  Specifically, the P key seemed to stay down.  I removed the spring and bent it some while eyeballing it and replaced it.

Prior to the adjustment, the distributor (the three spoked wheel to the right?) spins in one mode (local/line) but not the other.

After the spring adjustment in seems to behave the same in both modes in that it does not spin until a key is press and then it spins even after the key is released.

I’m reading the wikis now.

Is the distributor spinning?  If so, it is trying to send data, and the problem may not be electrical at all.

 Forgive me but I do not know what your knowledge level in electronics is but....

To check mA your meter must be connected in series with the loop.

NEVER put an amp meter across the terminals of a power source.

I’m not very familiar, but I seem to have all the diagrams and schematics and yes, I see the FS3 schematic.

My problem is associating the schematic with the physical parts and the schematic.

When I am asked to measure the 20ma, I have no idea where to connect the volt meter.

It looks like I’ll have a lot a reading to do to get familiar.

Yes, I have taken out the H plate during my “repair” and have placed it back.  I’ll look for that adjusting screw.  I not that with the H out, and the power on, I can manually move the conection to the H plate (the left side with the spring while looking at it from the front), but it keeps chattering.  The change in moving the spring side connection with a screwdriver is that a wheel on the right side rear that has three “fans” stops spinning and a clicking noise associated with it ceases.

Let me do some reading and I’ll get back to you.

The advice is definitely appreciated.

Just make sure the rubber hammer is in good condition. Its far too easy to destroy the print head. Some one on here has replacements.

I have a couple of ASR33 Teletypes and would like to get one working.  When I turn on the primary machine to either line or local, it “types” what seems to be a null character repeatedly.

As a bit of history, I had to do some work on my papertape power supply which I think I did successfully (although I accidentally touched something to it since and got a spark, so who knows?)

That power supply repair seemed to work OK, but I couldn’t leave well enough alone and decided to do a little cleanup.  I ended up taking the spring(s) off the bottom of the keyboard, cleaned it, and replaced it.  

Since then, I have had the problem of it “typing” without any keyboard input when powered on.

The reason I think that I have a NULL character is that if I turn on my papertape punch while this is happening, I get no holes in the tape except for the center sprocket holes.

Any ideas?  I was thinking about transplanting the “other” keyboard, but from what I read, that’s just asking for trouble.
