Nick,
I finally got a chance to unbox & inspect the mystery KLI reperf you
sent me. With the parallel input and supply & take-up reels, I'm sure it
was used to monitor outgoing messages from an automatic tape-relay center.
A few interesting observations:
1. Motor says "48V DC" The FGC-30 was 115VAC (except for a TT-239,
which was a 48VDC, solenoid operated, tape reader). 48VDC was standard
supply for TELCOs & microwave.
2. Tape size is 11/16", rather than the standard KLI tape of 7/8". Maybe
this was just because it was non-printing, so wouldn't need the extra
width tape. But if used with other KLI equipment, would have needed to
stock two sizes of tape. Conversely, maybe it was used with Teletype
Corp equipment already using 11/16".
3. The SPDT reed relays on top of the selector magnets appear to be
used to confirm what bits were decoded. They connect to J2 which is
mounted over J1, as if it were an add-on.
4. I remembered that there was a Navy "Index of TTY & FAX " (NAVSHIPS
93434) that cross-referenced by manufacturer. I looked at all the KLI
(CCTB) machines that were not listed in the 1970 KLI catalog, but
couldn't find anything that fit (DC operated, 11/16" tape). But the
index is 1961, so maybe this machine is newer.
Did you query Tom Kleinschmidt about this machine? he doesn't seem too
active on Greenkeys. I don't think he knows much about the automatic
torn-tape relays, but if you haven't asked about it, I'll ask him.
Thanks,
Duncan
