[GreenKeys] Model 43 replacement ribbon ?

Thanks folks.
I now have the 43 in my hands. It's an older style (magnetic mounting) ink cartridge and opening up reveals the ink sponge (whilst wet with ink) has become sticky easily damaged.

@Nick England - would love to hear more about possible replacement of this sponge.

Thanks.

IF the ink roller in your M42/M43 cartridge has disintegrated, let me know and I may be able to help.
Here is info on re-inking and new ribbons, from the archives,
Nick

Re-inking
---------------
A little WD-40 on the ribbon and/or ink-roller (in the cartridge), may help re-activate a dried up ribbon.
If you need to re-ink the roller, inkjet black works. Mike re-inked his rollers with Chromaleaf pigment black ink, which appears to be just inkjet cartridge refill stuff.

Well... I just thought I'd pass on some information about the ribbons for the TTY Model 43 printer. I tried a few things that failed and one that works well. In fact it worked for me and Gab Egan. I found a ribbon supplier that was willing to make me a ribbon. It worked in both my and Gab's machines. I had to have 6 ribbons made as a minimum order and they were about $10 US each. If you would like to order your own from the supplier here is the address and telephone number.

I talked to MIA.

I told them I wanted a 1/4 inch nylon ribbon, bonded together for a continuous loop at 38 1/2 inches. And they pre-inked them. I know that the original loop was 39 inches, but that loop size was too big for my machine. You should probably accurately measure yours and adjust the length of the loop. On my machine I have plenty of room for the ribbon to stretch as the old ribbons I have. Once you have the ribbon just thread it into the box, mount it in the machine and off you go. It worked for me, good luck

Hi Chuck,

Welcome to the group. One thing you probably want to do is search the archives for Model 43 Ribbon. The challenge is that you will get 911 results :-(

Hello all you GreenKeyers,

This is my first post since discovering this fantastic group a few weeks ago (thanks to mr_rtty for telling me about this group)!!!

I too need ribbons for my two Teletype Model 43’s that I’m trying to get working for myself and my small telecom museum that I am the curator of here at Nokia (formerly Lucent Technologies/Alcatel-Lucent/AT&T/Bell Labs/Western Electric/Teletype).

I’ve just about exhausted every possible avenue of getting ribbons. I have one machine just about working but can’t see what it is trying to print. The ribbon has holes due to the previous owner, and I shattered the petrified reinking wheel just by touching it and trying to measure it.

I contacted many suppliers of dot-matrix cartridges hoping to find someone that has a 1/4” (6mm) x 39” (1000mm) ribbon so I can replace it but haven’t had any luck.

Michael Enkelis, I sure would like to buy a few of those cartridges that you printed so that I have a spare for each. I thought about learning how to create a 3D copy but that was farther down on my list... finding a replacement ribbon and reinking wheel is first.

So does anyone have a source of replacement ribbon and reinking wheel, or even a whole new cartridge???

THANKS for such a great network of experts on this forum keeping Teletypes alive!!!
