Also, all 5 bits are space. I suspect they made that not print anything so
that an open loop (machine "running open") would not result in a character
being typed over and over. If they wanted to get even more mechanically
complicated, they could stop on the lack of a stop bit (a space in the
stop bit position) and wait for the loop to go back to mark, then wait for
the start bit of the next character. A stop bit being space results in a
Framing Error in a UART. On a Teletype, it just never stops.
