That ought to work -- some circlip pliers have ends bent at close to 80 degrees to the handle, but the tool I described how to make works better.  Having the tool handle down in the plane of the top of the type cylinder really helps compared to being up 1/2 inch and up 10 degrees from horizontal.  Also, your really want the ends to fit the holes in the top of the type cylinder fairly tightly.

The mild steel wire I used came from a political yard sign.  Modern yard signs slip over large wire "staples" that are then abandoned by the political campaigns.  Every two years, there's a fresh infusion of the things into my neighborhood, and after the election, I collect a few for the wire -- turns out that Democratic wire works just as well as Republican wire.  It's useful stuff, and there are several different wire gauges that are in common use for yard-signs.  The range of applications is similar to the range of applications for coat-hanger wire, but the wire is significantly heavier, so you can use it where more strength is required.
