I think it was something he mentioned in what he was describing as the reason he wanted to show kids how we communicated back in the day. I thought he mentioned before the digital age in one form or another, but don’t have his explanation here in front of me at the moment.
Those mark and space “bits’ were our 1s and 0s, so its has been “digital” for ages.

What do you mean "pre-digital"?
Where do you think the term "Baud rate" comes from?
We tell visitors at the AWA Museum that digital communications has been around for over 130 years! And email started in the 1930s (TWX/TELEX)!

Thought it was interesting that he wanted to show the kids how we did things in pre-digital age, yet if he was to put a scope across the contacts of a TD with a little current in a loop he could show the "1s and 0s" of that non-digital era equipment.
Maybe we should send him a TD as well!
