[GreenKeys] Model 32

Why is this device called a RANGE FINDER ? Well, it can be used to find out
the 'range' in which the machine will provide near - errorless copy, with a few
assumptions.

Ideally, one needs a "FOX Machine" which is programmed to send the famous
"QUICK BROWN FOX" sentence, over and over, while one slowly moves
the RANGEFINDER in one direction, noting the 'number' where errors start to
show. Then the RANGEFINDER is moved in the other direction, past the area
where it was showing good copy, until errors again start to show. This number is
also noted. The difference between the two numbers is THE RANGE.

Then, the smaller is subtracted from the larger to provide an actual number. That
is the 'points of range' for that machine. This difference is divided by two, then that
figure is added to the lower number, and this SUM is the place to set the
RANGEFINDER for optimum copy. This sometimes allows for static, interference
a generally noisy band and perhaps some 'bias' distortion in the incoming signal.

Now, about those 'assumptions' mentioned above.

One is that when you are on the air or copying some kind of broadcast, that the sending
station has the same speed gears in his machine, and that both machines are 7.41 code or
7.00 code, along with the receiving station. Minor differences can get in the mix, so
having one's "RANGE" properly set gives the best copy. For compensating for a
difference in speed, you are on your own. It has been noted by several that by making
a change to one's RANGEFINDER, they can get fair to good copy from a source that
is running at a different speed.

Now, I am going from memory, after seeing a friend do this to a number of machines he
had repaired or modified or otherwise worked on for friends. He had one of those "FOX
Machines" and knew how and when to use it.

The first time I watched him do this, he 'talked me through it' and explained virtually every
move he made.

Without one of these machines, the next best approach is to make an "RYRYRYRY"
tape and make it into a loop and run it through your TD as the source for making the
adjustments and calculations mentioned above.

There are a few people here on GreenKeys who know who I am talking about with the
'lesson' above. Going back to the late 1960s, he was a Michigan Bell Telephone employee,
who hired in around the time I was born, as a TELEGRAPHER for them! He eventually
got into installations and on site repairs, and eventually made it into Management. He
NEVER worked in any kind of data or with Teletype machines. This became a hobby for
him, later in his life.

He was one of the unfortunates who got drafted twice. Once for WW II and again for the
"Korean festivities". But, that's another story for another 'group', maybe.

I hope I've created more useful information than confusion. I suspect that there will be some
who know this process and might add a few details here and there. Have at it. I know that
what I offered above is reasonable, but perhaps not 'right out of the book'.

For now,

Ralph - W8ROI

Ah, so! Did not realize it was actually handling a speed difference! Thought it was just to allow "dial" capabilities for a machine that had no dial mechanism.

Another day and still learning!

Hi Steve, you are using a special feature of i-Telex that alllows it to work with 60WPM. The telex standard is 66WPM, but the smart folks behind iTelex made firmware that translates back and forth for 60WPM machines.

You guys have me thoroughly confused! My M28 is at 60 WPM and I go back and forth between i-Telex, ITTY, and RTTY all the time?

Jeff,
Very good point! If you send at the wrong speed the receive end would have to move his rangefinder. Dont think most would do that.

You need to decide what speed you want to copy. But you don't want to
have to change gears whenever you want to switch between ITTY and
I-TELEX, so the range control is the simplest way to cover both 60 &
66 WPM.

Here we go again.
The Ranger finder only helps you copy the wrong speed.
It does nothing to your transmit speed.
i-Telex will only work if your machine is running at 66 WPM.
