E. ?? (Don't know your name.)
The Rangefinder is used to adjust things as parts wear out a bit. The idea is to
keep the actual selection as close to the center of each bit as possible. As parts
wear, this can change slightly, and if the error rate becomes too high, some
experimenting with the Rangefinder can compensate a bit. Eventually, some
parts may have to be replaced.
Playing with the Rangefinder to get a signal of another speed to print with fewer
errors has been around for a while. It is NOT a cure-all, however. There are
also situations where one machine might be running with a 7.0 unit code, and
another on 7.41 unit code. 7.0 unit code 'sounds' faster, but the character count
is almost exactly the same. It is just that each character complete a few milli-
seconds faster sometimes causing the machine to latch the clutch for one or two
milliseconds, before releasing it for the next character. There are a lot of combos
of WPM gear speed and unit code.
As someone mentioned, playing with the Rangefinder has little or no effect on
transmit speed.
Good luck, and do keep track of 'working settings' if you decide to play with the
Rangefinder.

I had thought - or have always understood that the rangefinder is for adjusting varied loop currents due to location and distance. How can a TT properly print at motor frequency if the other side is sending it at a different speed (thus what the gears are for)? The rangefinder can’t compensate for that — or that much, can it?
