Have the motor turned off.
Have the printer and keyboard in series
  in the local loop, with loop current flowing.
Turn the motor by hand (as I recall, it goes
  clockwise looking at the motor fan);
  turn enough to be sure everything on the
  main shaft turns freely and doesn't jam.
Press the R key on the keyboard;
Rotate the motor by hand;
The keyboard contacts will open and close
  the local loop, and the selector magnets
  will respond to the open and close (space
  and mark) conditions - but in 'slow motion'!
Continue rotating the motor by hand and
  watch how the horizontal selector bars in the
  front of the typing unit move up and down to
  set up the code for R;
If all sets up correctly, eventually the typebar
  bail (underneath) should snag the R typebar
  and try to flip it up to print (it won't flip with
  much power because you are doing 'slow motion'
If the R typebar does try to 'flip' then all is good;
Repeat above for the Y key on the keyboard.

If both work correctly, it's time to turn on the
motor and try it in 'real time' ...  :))
