 Chuck,
A teletype sends and receives data by opening and closing a 60mA DC current loop. This is very similar to the way old rotary dial telephones dialed numbers. The main difference between teletype and rotary phone dialing is a teletype uses Baudot code.
A TU (Terminal Unit) is a teletype modem. It converts the 60mA pulses into audio tonesthat can be sent over the radio. In your case it would send the audio tones to the computer's soundcardand software like MTTY or FLDIGI would decode these tones and display them.It works in both directions. You could type on the computer and have it print on the teletype or you could type on the teletype and have itdisplay on the screen. Here is a link to some info.https://w6iwi.org/rtty/tu170/

Using a TU is just one option.Another option is to build an interface box of some sort to convert between 60mA TTY and computer RS232or USB.There are plans out there if you look for them. Others may be able to provide more info on that option.
Hope this helps,-Steve

 Hello GreenKeys,
Thanks for all the fast replies!
Wayne: I work on my own cars, so that bodes well. Even though it was the '90s, I'm pretty sure the machines I remember were Model 15's. I saw a sample of the output, and it brought me right back.
Paul: I'm in Newton, Massachusetts.
Steve: Where can I read about TU's?
Chuck
