It would be fun to do high speed CW on amateur radio using either the old
mechanical equipment or a computer.
Years ago I needed to design a CW ID system for a telemetry system that
could work over radio circuits (FCC part 74 P channels). The ID was saved
in ASCII. The ASCII to Morse conversion was a table lookup. The ASCII bias
for numbers followed by punctuation then letters was subtracted out so a
zero gave an index value of 0. This indexed into an array of bytes where
the 5 lsb of each byte was Morse with 0 being dit and 1 being dah. The 3
most significant bits told the system how many of the lower bits to use
(such as 1 for E or T and 5 for numbers). This was all done in MC6800
assembly language.
