First off, I hope all had glorious 4th. Pretty nice weather here and
somewhat cool for July. I know some are on pins and needles wondering
what the tropical storm is going to do. I hope all are safe.
Now this will probably repeat because I don't recall what I've posted
and what I haven't.
The easy one first.
The KSR didn't ring the bell and had some strange stuff in it. I had a
spare SB with the basics in it. I added a sequence detector (aka CDC)
to it which detects the granddaughter's name (Olivia) and rings the
bell. Worked first crack out of the box.
The ASR wouldn't do a CR, it did Auto CRLF, and the manual red button
worked, but not a CR signal from the line.
It turned out to have a LF function bar in the CR position, but it
didn't seem to function on a LF signal either. Removed SB and removed
some gunk from that area of the SB. Decided to not change the LF
function bar since I thought the gunk was the problem.
Put the SB back in and it seemed to work fine.
Did the aforementioned KSR mods at this point in time.
Back to work on the ASR, finished lubricating the LXD, put the sheet
metal parts back on (a screw left over, grrr).
Did a test run to make sure everything was OK.
Decided to do a little beautification, cleaned and polished the
exterior. Did a little vacuuming behind and removed some old cables I
no longer needed for POTS. Slept good that night.
Next day I was showing off to the family. I noticed it was not printing
the U in country and times it wouldn't print the rest of country. RYs
stopped at the same location. Then it flat locked up at the far right.
Even the red CR key didn't bring it back.
So out comes the printer, got the typebox carriage moving freely again.
Out comes the SB (SoB?). I'm thinking the universal CDC is U, and the
character that got dropped first was a U. So I decided I don't need all
this extra stuff anyhow and proceeded to clear out everything from slot
6 to slot 37 except for the UC S (bell switch) stuff. (Some of you will
be able to anticipate what happens next) Hey the minimal SB out of my
spares didn't have any of that and works fine in the KSR.
Got it all back together and it prints crazy. Only returns halfway and
then starts to print. Hey it spaces on blank and LF, hmmm.
So out comes the SB one more time. Put in LF and BL function bars with
the space suppression function levers. It seems well behaved now.
Let's see what happens tomorrow?
This was a little like an experience I had with the starter motor on a
'80 Cadillac Diesel. The original died and I took it in to swap for a
re-built. The process took the better part of a day. That exhaust pipe
is in the wrong place and it took forever to figure the route to get the
starter motor out. In about a week the re-built one died. No problem,
they swapped it for another re-built. The in and out too more like 3
hours this time. You guessed it, the 2nd one died too. By now I was
getting some sympathy from the counter folks and they gave me a GM new
starter motor the 3rd time. The last time I took out the old one and
put in the new one in half an hour. After all the practice, I knew
exactly which was to twist and turn and how far I could move between
each twist before twisting again.
I'm much quicker removing and replacing stunt boxes now too. The step I
kept forgetting was moving the LF single/double lever to the double
position. This last time I nailed it!
