Hams have run RTTY on repeaters for decades and I have never heard of 
the audio dropping.  However, at least the 2M repeaters of old here in 
SoCal did not use PL for repeater access, they depended on Mark tone.  
They were RTTY ONLY!  146.70 was the frequency I remember.

BTW, I would love to see a RTTY repeater again.  I am in Glendora (just 
SW of the I-210 and 57 freeways).  What repeater locations / frequency 
are you trying to use?  Might give me good excuse to get the M28 back on 
the air.
