And it looks like the early style had a little larger depth from the backside of the typebox to the mounting “ears” that are used to locate the typebox into the carriage mechanism.

New style has an X on the edge. I think the top edge if I remember correctly

I have seen an explanation of old/new somewhere. I’ll try to find it.

Plus how do I know if the typebox I’m currently holding in my hand is the old style or the new style? Is there a trick to knowing which is which?

Speaking of these springs, if you had some loose in a box, how would you know if they were old or new design? I would guess the newer design is shorter, but if you don't have some of each, you still don't know.

I know I have seen it somewhere, probably on Nick’s Navy-Radio page, but darn if I can find it now!
Looking for the Parts Breakdown for the typebox used on the M28, and I would guess the M35 as well. Really looking for the part number for the spring that is on every type pallet inside the typebox. Would like to see if Paul Cembura has any in his parts stock.
How many of you have ever taken a type box apart? Any pointers on getting the spring disconnected from the pallet to prevent you from ruining the spring?
Now I know why the instructors in my USAF tech school were so upset with me when I discovered they had reversed the R and the Y that were in the typebox on the machine I was assigned to “discover the bug.” I found the bug much more quickly than the time it must have taken them to get the pallets switched! And now I understand the statement they made when they handed me a unmodified typebox and said “we’re saving this for the next smart-ass that come through here!”
I was playing musical type pallets on a type box that was blank at the FIGS-H position (STOP?) while my keyboard had a # sign on the FIGS position and would space but not print anything. I removed the # type pallet from a typebox that had the fractional character type pallets that I knew I would never use.
