Also known here in Oz as "stagger by stagger" switching, according to my 
brother who used to work for the PMG.  And if you've seen those things in 
action, you'll know why.

And yes, cable lacing is an art.

Chandlers sell all sorts of things; there was one opposite where I used to 
slave ^W work (my then $PHB wanted to know where he could buy an NMEA 
receiver for his boat).
