And it seems to have taken a lot of tries to get a good perforator,
as evidenced by the number of patents for those.  The perforator had
to deal with the different character widths in the typesetter font,
and then with the spacebands which are the things that fill in blank
spaces in the line to be cast.  So it was a lot more complicated than
the perforators for characters of uniform width.
