Interesting sample stories! Looking around a bit more, I found this page
on teletypesetting: https://www.smecc.org/teletypes_in_typesetting.htm .

It is amazing what they did on the perforator to keep track of where they
were on a line.

Something that I thought would be interesting for the 14 reperforator
would be to have the tape preprinted with marks or color changes that
would correspond to a line length. Of course, non-printing characters
would still consume space on the tape, but it seems that this might be
"close enough." It would be similar to the color change at the center of
the roll telling you that you are about out of tape. An operator could
watch the tape for a color change and know it's about time to put in a
CRLF. Seems a LOT simpler than the various character position counters,
and is probably close enough for most applications. Was such tape ever
produced?
