The TT-76 in the GRC-46 made lots of chad! It used wider (7/8") tape and
printed on the wider edge. (Some later KLI reperfs could take both sizes
of tape and then typed over the feed holes on the narrower tape.)

That makes sense. The tape lid would need to have room for the chad lids
to move up so the pins could read the hole.

That is what the feed holes in this LPR looks like: "craters"
What was your MOS? operator or repairman?
I was a 31J - TTY repairman. But I had been a ham for 8 years before
going into the service, and found I knew as much about radios as the
Army-trained radio repairmen. So I worked on radios in my spare time and
got my MOS changed to radio repair.
