Yes, it's intramuscular (IM).  Which is why it's relatively easy to
administer -- just aim for the "fleshy part" while avoiding nerves and blood
vessels.  And hitting the bone if you get too aggressive.  The deltoid
nicely meets those requirements, including ease-of-access.

In the "good old days" the large-volume penicillin doses for VD went into
the gluteus maximus ("butt") for the same reasons.

It is my understanding that the reason that the shot
hurts so bad is that the needle goes into the muscle tissue.

I had a bit of discomfort at the entry point - but it
only lasted a couple of days - and only if it touched
the area.
