[GreenKeys] 4/1 and the XASR

Joe,
Look carefully at the picture in the link, and then this one. The
original article has two ASR's not the three in this shot! Either one
would have been very uncomfortable for two ops, but I guess not bad if
really just one. Our ship, USS Edson (DD-946) in 197o/71 had three
ASR's lined up in a row on one bulkhead in the TTY room tied to crypto
boxes for outgoing traffic. That was tight enough for my taste with
three full ASR's!! Most of the incoming was on the "Fleet Broadcast",
and we had to take the copy from one of the RO's in the TTY room that
copied 24/7. Good old days, but the ship is now a museum ship in Bay
City, MI and all that is no longer on board, naturally. I didn't check
out the crypto room, but will if that room is even there now when I can
get back up there one day to see her again.
