[GreenKeys] Lubrication question.

I have always assumed that Castrol (brand) was a contraction of castor oil,
which of course would make it vegetable oil, from the castor bean. I doubt
if they still make any castor oil based product, most two stroke oils are
now synthetic. Castor oil was (is) used in two stroke engines for total loss
lubrication, i.e. it is injected into the crankcase where it is eventually
burn in combustion, or it is premixed with the fuel. The smell is
distinctive, as anyone who moto-crossed in the sixties and seventies or flew
model aircraft know. It also caused nausea and diarrhea for the WWI pilots
that got a face full of it from the rotary engines in front of them.
If I remember from childhood experience, it is indeed not miscible with
hydrocarbon oils. It also gets very sticky, as those of us that collect old
model engines know.

Scott,
When I used to pick people up who fell off their Motorcycles whilst racing
them, I learnt that in the UK many were lubricated by a non-mineral oil,
namely "Castrol R"..

https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-77371-castrol-power1-r-40-sae-40-castor-based-r

it has a distinctive smell, and does not mix with mineral oils, so for me
the term "mineral oil" is significant and meaningful and tells me to keep it
way from any bike containing "R"
