 Jeff:
I cleaned a M28 Typing unit by putting it into a 5 gal sonic cleaner with "orange cleaner " from Horrible Freight.  Set the Temp to 104F and after it had reached the set temp again, ran it for 60 minuets.

The printer mech had been in a barn for about 5 years and came out like new!!  Sprayed it with a can of PLS oil I had from the Army and installed it and ran just fine.  Went back and re-did all the felts later to make certain it was all correct.

You could just spray the orange cleaner on and let it wash off the gunk and re-lube it, but the heating worked just fine. did not remove the platen either and the orange cleaner did not hurt it!

 Let's try rephrasing the question.

Who has actually removed WD-40 gunk in a Teletype machine
and how did you do it?
What cleaners/solvents and in what sequence?
