Won't work. The problem is that rats can chew through nearly
anything. Even if they don't make nests in the gear they can do a
great deal of damage. Its hard to tell what they will chew, I've
seen them chew up plastic wastepaper baskets, chew through wood,
many kinds of plastics. Will chew some wire but not other, I
don't know what kinds of insulation they leave alone. Metal is
just about the only thing will will stop them.  Exterminators
often plug things up with hardware cloth so it may be an
alternative wrapping. OTOH, they will chew on tin cans although
usually only eat the labels. I think mostly they are looking for
material for nests rather than food. If you have a real rat
problem a professional exterminator is about the only choice.
FWIW, some cats are not born good mousers, they have to be
taught by their mothers, same with dogs. Some dogs are better at
catching rats than cats are.
A tip, the best bait is bread and peanut butter. Leave snap
traps uncocked but baited for a couple of weeks and then set
them. The mice/rats will get used to eating the bait and will get
whacked. I can't use sticky traps. Rats are pandemic, get a good
exterminator.
I know about this because I just went through it.
