The best description I've seen is to think of it as a mechanical shift 
register; the bits get shifted in one by one, then slammed out to the type 
basket.  Happens in reverse on sending, with the keys setting up the bits 
to be shifted out.

A while ago I posted an URL to a nice animation that showed the mechanism
quite clearly, but now I cannot find it.
