Lorenz built the licensed version of a Teletype model 15 called Lo15
starting from the
early days of teleprinting. Lorenz was its own company and the biggest
competitor
in communications equipment to Siemens here in Germany.
Here in Germany answerbacks were common (and necessary) with the start of the
public Telex network (inventend by Siemens) in 1932. The network was
automatic from its
first day and designed for unattended 24/7 use of the machines. Hence
from those days almost
all teleprinters were commonly equipped with answerback mechanisms.

Since both machines (TT model 15 and Lorenz Lo15) are basically the
same machines
and Lorenz already had experience with answerback units, maybe
Teletype decided to easily
purchase them from its business and license partner in Germany.

Attached of a picture of an early Lorenz Lo15 keyboard unit with
answerback drum installed.
