A suggestion was made to replace the neon lamps wih LEDs. In many
demodulator circuits, the bulbs are not just indicators, they are used
as switches that require a threshold voltage to turn on. Using a zener
in series with an led might not work either, the firing threshold
voltage is higher than the sustaining voltage. Also, a neon lamp is
bidirectional. I try to replace incandescent lamps with LEDs anywhere
I can, but some circuits are designed around a particular lamp and
substitutes will not work.
