Neon bulbs do not have a getter, so gasses imbedded in the glass can
come out and contaminate the neon. Atmospheric gasses may diffuse
through the glass. The neon may embed itself in the crystalline
structure of the electrodes. Neon sign tubes must have new electrodes
installed and be re-evacuated and refilled periodically, usually
measured in decades. They tend to require this more frequently if they
are lit constantly. They are very long lived, but not forever.
