Dunno about sidies, but back in the late 70s one of our computer operators 
was in the (Oz) Naval Reserve, and kept trying to recruit me.  Now, I was 
a long-haired bearded hippie then (hey man, and pretty much still am; 
you'll find my twisted visage over on www.horsfall.org/dave.jpg) and I 
knew about the hair regs but asked about the beard.  Apparently at first 
you have to be clean-shaven so your instructor can recognise you, then you 
can ask for permission to grow one.
