ESA is "Electrical Service Assembly" which is an external box added to a
Teletype set to provide things like a Selector Magnet Driver, Line Relay,
etc.
Here is an example ESA used with the skintight (rack mount) 28KSR. Note it
has a tube-type SMD. http://www.navy-radio.com/tty/esa-173395.jpg

Low-level (+/-6v signalling) Teletype sets also had ESA boxes - see for
example
http://www.navy-radio.com/tty/ugc77.htm

I recently found that there is an ESA 334439 for a high-level compact KSR
(AN/UGC-20B) which can transmit either 60ma (130v) or 70uA (1.5v). 323116
(MK-1158/UG) is the mod kit to make a UGC-20 into a UGC-20B - but I have
found no other info on that ESA so far.
50524S is the spec for this mod - Please let me know if you can help with
info, etc.

Cheers,
