RKO General resulted from the sale of RKO Pictures to General Tire in
1955. General Tire merged all its broadcast holdings into the holding
company RKO General in 1959. RKO General operated six TV stations and a
dozen radio stations between 1959 and 1991. General Tire had invested
heavily in broadcasting beginning in 1943, and with the advent of TV the
purchase of the studio was mainly for RKO's extensive library which
could be shown on TV. RKO Studios stopped movie production in 1957 and
the facilities were sold to Desilu Productions.
