I am glad to hear the KYW call is still active. KYW was one
of the first stations licensed by the Department of Commerce and
was owned by Westinghouse. It went on the air in Chicago but,
sometime in the 1930s. the Federal Radio Commission, predecessor
of the FCC, decided it had authorized too many stations in Chi so
the call was moved to Philadelphia. Westinghouse later sold it to
NBC. In the more recent past NBC traded it to CBS for WCAU to
stifle union action at both stations. However, for decades KYW
was the NBC affilliate in Philly. However, I think for a time the
call was also moved to Cleveland where it replaced WTAM, another
NBC o&o. Obviously got moved back.
Westinghouse used an all news format for most of its stations
until the merger with CBS. They owned KFWB here. The CE of KFWB
was a friend and told me he thought they had a better Teletype
sound effect than the rival KNX, a CBS O&O, also all-news. For a
time KNX had a couple of actual Teletype machines in cases near
the on air announcer. I don't know when they stopped using the
sound effect but I think many people these days would not know
what the sound was. Times change and memories are short.
    Please keep safe.
