Heck I just recently noticed there were different versions. Now I got to pay attention to issues numbers?
The only reason I figured it out was I was puzzled by the iPad trying to make phone numbers out of 573-000-001 and not 573-000-002TC. (Not necessarily valid numbers, examples only). I kept getting asked if I wanted to call that number. The TC at the end tells iPhone it's not a phone number.
I guess no one at Apple remembers numbers like Alpine 5-3289. (AL5-3289 would blow up your iPhone?)
