FSN=Federal Stock Number (original system) , format: xxxx-xxx-xxxx  first
group is federal stock class (FSC), second,third is NIIN (national item
identification number)
NSN=National (or NATO, if the country code is other than 00 or 01) Stock
Number (adds a two digit country code) ,format: xxxx-xx-xxx-xxxx
Same system with a country code added, used by all NATO members

The stock class will tell you what it is for example 5820 is ground radio,
5821 is airborne radios, 5960 is tubes, etc.

That's kinda weird -

As you mention, there's no FSN that begins with 5815, and converting to NSN
(add -00 - like "5815-00-XXX-XXXX") gets no hits. "5315" returns nothing as
well.

If the 5-digit number is a CAGE code (Commercial and Government Entity
code) - it comes back to a glass products machinery company in PA. (Billco,
inc)

Strange stuff....
