Having operated these typecasting machines, I think the warning is "hype" as there was a fail-safe mechanism for short lines.  If the line was to short, the machine would not cast that line. There were "squirts", but you really had to screw up in order for that to happen.

This is the first time I have seen reference to "53-speed." I thought it 
might be a limitation in the speed of the linecasting equipment, but 
there was also "66-speed" gears mentioned. (p4)

Note the warning  on p. 9 about not using the test tape on the 
typesetter unit, as  it may "cause hot lead to be sprayed from the 
linecasting machine."
