I did not realize typesetting machines were driven by punched tape. Although why not? It make total sense. I’m surprised that the typesetters union allowed it.
Years ago I bought a documentary of the Linotype on DVD. The trailer is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJBqekAMIaU
I highly recommend it if you can find it. In that documentary the issues of squirting molten lead is well discussed. But the machines in the documentary were all driven by hand. I can only image the chaos of trying to automate it. It seems like a lot of things involved that could go wrong.
I even contributed to a kickstarter years ago to save a linotype located in Austria from the scrap heap. The thank you reward was a set of cards with three lines of type of my choice that were actually made on the machine, plus the lead bars for those three lines of type that were made in the machine and used to print the cards. It was a very rewarding experience. Maybe some day I will see that exact machine.
