	I'm not surprised about the oil, I probably destroyed the belts
on my 3 machines by using various poorly chosen oils and cleaning agents...
took no particular care to prevent them from touching the belt rubbery
stuff... and of course don't particularly know what the previous owners
had done...

	It's also true that in more recent years I stored the machines
in the attic of my antique barn where temps get rather warm in the
summer (and cold in the winter) so the belts were subject to less than
ideal storage conditions for a number of years.

	But clearly I was not the only person to have belts turn to goo.
Many others have had the same experiance.  And I suppose it is conceivable
that something was changed late in the game to improve belt life...
so more recent production belts didn't deteriorate the same way.

	But I'd bet it was a matter of using the wrong oil or grease
on or near the belt...
