In this case, from the photo, it's clear that the cable was made up specially, transposing some of the conductors. Because of that, you can't use an off the shelf cable.
However, I've had great luck making IDC connections for anything up to 60 pins using a bench vise to press the cap down over the prongs that pierce the insulation. The key is, the two jaws have to be stable and stay exactly parallel as they pinch together, and the forces involved are large. The screw on a vise does this extremely well. So, I've never had cause to get the special tool for crimping the things.
