Reminds me of a contact I made on 40M many years ago.  The guy was describing his station and said the antenna was nothing special - just a quarter wave vertical.  But the ground plane was pretty good - about 80 by 800 feet of steel plate floating on and surrounded by 2,000 miles of salt water.
