The original  specification (c1944) for the TT-4 was just 60 wpm. But
after a couple years of development by Kleinschmidt & Teletype Corp, The
spec was changed to 60 and 100 wpm. Both Kleinschmidt & Teletype had to
essentially start over to make their designs work at 100wpm.  (Teletype
Corp had proposed a compact version of the M26, but then dropped out of
the Signal Corps bidding to concentrate on the M28 for the US Navy.)

We had one TT-98 running at 100WPM on our primary circuit in Viet Nam
for a few months with no problems.  But all the other KLI equipment we
had ran at 60 wpm. Many adjustments for KLI machines were more critical
at 100wpm than 60 wpm.

I have had the feeling that the M28 was  more at home at 100wpm than the
KLI machines, but don't have anything to back it up with.  The KLI
machines were made to be rugged and transported in jeeps & trucks than
the M28, so maybe they held together just as well as the M28s at
100wpm.  They both look like they are about to fly apart at that speed.
