There were two very similar military code practice machines. One that the
Army used would read paper tape with dots and dashes inked on it - like
this tape

The Navy had one that read Wheatstone punched tape like this -

The Navy one (AN/UGH-1) had two small "peckers" to read the holes in the
tape -

There were other Wheatstone tape readers that also had "peckers" for
reading the tape - this video shows a Teletype Wheatstone tape punch and a
McElroy tape reader in action
