Well, y'know, some machines have bell on figs-S and apostrophe on figs-J,
and some are the opposite.  Typically Western Union and European and hence
Telex use J bell; U.S. TWX, Bell System, Military, etc use S bell.

I've read that the origin of this business goes back to early Associated
Press.  They wanted two different bells, one to ring on the machine and
one to ring in the editor's office if something really hot came along.
So machine had one bell operated mechanically in the machine and another
operated by a contact closure in the machine.  But that doesn't explain
why two different mechanical bells prevailed, depending on the company.
