I was on a flight out of LaGuardia before American Airlines Sabre system
was in use there. They were using for reservations a wired-program
electronic system originally designed for inventory control purposes. The
system was made by Teleregister and was described in Western Union
Technical Review in October 1951 (something like 15 years before I
experienced it) It worked because a flight at a specific day and time is
like a part number and the number of seats is like a quantity in stock.
At the time of the article an experimental version of the system had been
in use for about four years.
