Hi Everybody,
I'm Sean, W7STK, and I've been granted reflector privileges. I joined the USAF during the Cold War, age 17. My recruiter must have noticed my interest in radios (Dad's striker badge in the Navy was sparks and he got me started), and the military taught me to be a Printer Systems Operator. Back at tech school, I saw myself trying to do RTTY on ham radio, but by the time I got my license I guess I wasn't really seeing hams doing it and forgot. Now I've got interested again. Note of interest, we had four branches of the service learning in Pensacola at Corry NTTC and it was almost a multi-cultural experience, except the Marines kept to themselves. Our loss...
I've been using the online SDRs and bought a National Panasonic RF-3100 on the place. I'd like to find out about combining my hobby of vintage computers with ham radio this way. The early IBM PCs have wonderful keyboards, just a joy to write with. It would be great to be able to put mine to work again. But, I also have this idea of trying to accomplish getting on the air with minimal equipment. Like, there used to be this joke on USENET, actually an insult, that said a person was posting to it using a Commodore 64 on dial-up from a trailer park.
Trailer parks seem to be going out of style when they need to be making a comeback. But even though I was never the recipient of the Commodore disparagement (despite using Lynx), when I read about it I took it as a challenge. It's one that I never got around to. Maybe I can just try to put a WYSE terminal on air instead.
Can anyone suggest websites for study and looking for gear? Oh, and I don't have a ground available because I rent. Are there any guesstimates as to if 25 watts into a vertical vee antenna made up of GRC-9 mast sections (resonant close to 20 meters) net me any contacts with the wide shift?
Thanks,
Sean
