[GreenKeys] KYW Teletype - an updated story from KYW

Should be "tip of the hat", no matter. KYW was one of the
first dozen or so calls issued by the Department of Commerce in
1920. Westinghouse got five of them, the famous KDKA in
Pittsburgh, WBZ Boston, WJZ New York (now WABC) and KYW,
originally issued to Chicago. A few years later (I have forgotten
the date) the Federal Radio Commission, predecessor to the FCC,
decided they had issued too many licenses to Chicago and decided
to eliminate KYW. Westinghouse moved it to Philadelphia. For
years KYW was the NBC affiliate in Philly. For a time RCA moved
the call to Cleveland in place of their O&O there WTAM but before
long moved it back. Some time ago NBC and CBS decided to trade
stations in Philadelphia as an anti-union ploy so WCAU and KYW
were traded.  Now Westinghouse and CBS have merged so KYW is back
in the Westinghouse fold. CBS has changed all their O&O stations
to all news. But, this was also the Westinghouse format. In Los
Angeles both owned radio stations and both were all news but the
CBS station, KNX, is a fifty thousand watt unlimited while the
Westinghouse station, KFWB was five KW so guess which one
survived? KFWB was sold and, after some musical chairs, is now
Spanish language. KFWB used pretty much the same TTY sound effect
on the web site. KNX had actual machines in a counter under the
announcer's console. The TT sound effect disappeared years ago. I
suspect that even during its lifetime many younger listeners had
no idea what it was.
A million years ago, when I was a kid, I had a friend at KFI.
I used to visit every so often and remember the actual news room
in back with several Teletype machines going. Noisy and hot. I
loved watching the news come in on the wire service machines.
