[GreenKeys] Booking hotel via Teletype

Curious on something, I apologize as I'm not sure if I asked this already.
I often see old postcards and matchbook covers from hotels/motels where
they offered the ability to book via Teletype. Curious to know:

1. Did they actually have a teletype onsite to receive the bookings?
2. From an end-user perspective, I'm assuming if a regular Joe wanted to
book, they'd have to use something like Western Union to book via Teletype,
or I guess a Travel agency?
3. Were the teletype addresses more geared for travel agents?
